The management of the Liechtenstein Institute's specialist departments changes at regular intervals. At the beginning of March 2025, two departments were given new heads. Stephan Scheuzger took over as head of the History Department, replacing Fabian Frommelt, who had been in charge for two years. There was also a change in the Department of Economics. Andreas Brunhart is taking over as Head of the Department for the second time, having previously held the position for two years with Martin Geiger.

Liechtenstein’s economic output measured by real gross domestic product (GDP) stagnated in 2024, interrupting the brief economic upward trend of the previous year. According to the Liechtenstein-Institute’s estimation model, nominal GDP will amount to around CHF 7’484 million in 2024. In relation to the nominal GDP 2023 of the preliminary estimate published by the Office for Statistics, the estimation model for 2024 shows nominal GDP growth of just over 0%; adjusted for inflation, the real GDP growth rate in 2024 is therefore around −1%.

On March 26, 2025, the local council of the municipality of Gamprin visited the Liechtenstein Institute to view the results of the 2024 building renovation work. Director Thomas Meier welcomed the guests and thanked the municipality of Gamprin for its support in this successful renovation of the former vicarage. Following a brief tour of the building, the local council held its council meeting in the seminar room of the Liechtenstein Institute.

In December 2024, a jury selected the word of the year, the sentence of the year and the number of the year 2024 from over 500 suggestions - namely: 29. According to a study by the Liechtenstein Institute, 29 percent of the population are "news-abstinent", meaning they do not read or listen to conventional news. LPC President Carmen Dahl has now presented the Liechtenstein Institute with a corresponding certificate.

The ongoing uncertainty in the global economy is putting pressure on global foreign trade. As a consequence, Liechtenstein’s business cycle weakness continues. The value of the KonSens business cycle index increased slightly in the 4th quarter of 2024, from -1.1 to -0.8.

Die erste Kurzanalyse der Wahlumfrage des Liechtenstein-Instituts zeigt unter anderem, dass die FBP im Vergleich zu 2021 Wählende sowohl an die VU wie auch an die DpL verloren hat. Auch die VU hat einen Teil ihrer Wählerschaft an die DpL verloren, konnte dies aber dank starken Zugewinnen von FBP und FL mehr als kompensieren.

On 22 January, the Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium invited the candidates for parliament and the government candidates to Vaduz so that they could introduce themselves and their party to the students as part of the 2025 parliamentary elections. Thomas Milic from the Liechtenstein Institute was also present as an expert on electoral law and electoral system issues and was on hand to answer a wide range of questions about the upcoming parliamentary elections.

On February 9, 2025, Liechtenstein will once again hold parliamentary elections. To mark this occasion, the association wahlhilfe.li launched an online platform for the third time after 2017 and 2021, which provides information on the political positions of the candidates. The Liechtenstein Institute created a questionnaire for this purpose and is also supporting the project with its scientific expertise.

In a new article in the journal “European Political Science Review”, Daniel Kübler and Philippe Rochat examine participation in municipal direct-democratic assemblies. The analysis not only reveals existing inequalities in participation, but also shows which features of an assembly are particularly conducive to the willingness of different population groups to participate.

Hugo Grotius’ work “De jure belli ac pacis” (On the Law of War and Peace) is the focus of a five-year research project at the Max Planck Institute. The book is considered the foundation of modern international law. The Liechtenstein Institute’s copy comes from Gerard Batliner’s private library and was donated to the Institute.
