There were many similarities between the municipalities in Liechtenstein, Grisons, St. Gallen and Vorarlberg. Accordingly, the Liechtenstein legislature was able to draw a wide range of suggestions from Switzerland and Austria. Nevertheless, the Liechtenstein municipal laws of 1842 and 1864 are independent creations. Particular attention is paid to access to the communal use of land (i.e. the handling of land and goods that were used jointly) and to the treatment of foreigners and Liechtenstein citizens from other municipalities (so-called "Hintersassen").
