The aim of the symposium was not to add to the many reviews of 1806 that were held on the occasion of the two hundredth anniversary of this powerful event in European history. Rather, the question was about the significance and the fate of the small States in Europe from the early modern era to the present. The caesura of the year 1806 is thus overlapping in time. Thus their historical weight is strikingly emphasized and at the same time placed in broad perspectives.
