The “representative” parliament: Parliamentary representation in Liechtenstein and the Swiss cantons

15 Apr 2025 - New Publication
Yesterday, Karin Frick presented an analysis of the parliamentary deputization systems in Liechtenstein and the Swiss cantons to an interested audience. Not only are there countless ways in which parliamentary deputization can be regulated, there are also very different goals and priorities behind them.

Deputy members of parliament are the norm in Liechtenstein, albeit one that sometimes causes debate and raises questions. While there is a constant debate here in Liechtenstein about whether this old tradition is still needed, some cantonal and municipal parliaments in Switzerland have recently introduced deputization. The lecture discussed, among other things, what is hoped for elsewhere from a deputization solution, how existing deputization systems differ from one another and how parliamentary deputization can be rethought.

The presentation of the lecture The representative parliament – parliamentary deputization in Liechtenstein and the Swiss cantons is now available online.
