In a guest article in the annual report of the Clinicum Alpinum, Andreas Brunhart and Martin Geiger discuss the economic role of the healthcare sector and the importance of the physical and mental constitution of the population for economic growth. The article also looks at the interactions between health, happiness and prosperity.

The economic significance of individual healthcare facilities and the healthcare industry in general is difficult to quantify - especially in Liechtenstein, where data is comparatively scarce. However, an important role of the healthcare sector can also be documented for Liechtenstein.

The “health” factor is also taken into account in the Liechtenstein Institute’s Growth Monitor. The Growth Monitor is designed according to the view that prosperity is a multidimensional concept and analyzes relevant economic data that depicts the long-term growth development of the Liechtenstein economy from various perspectives. In addition to traditional economic indicators, indicators that reflect aspects such as living conditions or resource consumption are also important for the long-term and sustainable development of an economy.
