The Historical Lexicon of the Principality of Liechtenstein (HLFL) was published in January 2013 in two printed volumes. It will be digitized by the Liechtenstein Institute from 2017 and continued as an online encyclopedia (open access).

The HLFL bundles the historical knowledge about the country and its people from the beginnings to the present in about 2600 thematic, biographical and geographical articles. In addition, there is a large number of tables, charts, maps and family tree tables. The encyclopedia contains factual articles on topics from state and politics, society and economy, culture and church, nature and environment. Geographical articles deal in detail with Liechtenstein municipalities and other relevant localities in Liechtenstein and abroad. Individual biographies and information on the sovereign dynasties and middle-class families round out the work. The historical relations of the small State beyond its borders are consistently taken into account.

The Historical Lexicon of the Principality of Liechtenstein was initiated in 1988 by the Historical Association for the Principality of Liechtenstein. In 2000, it was restructured and its ownership was transferred to the Liechtenstein Government. In 2016, the Government granted the Liechtenstein Institute in Bendern the right to make the entire text and graphic content of the encyclopedia available online, to update and expand it. The contents are made available to the public free of charge.
