Every democratic state needs an electoral system that governs how members of the national parliament are elected by eligible voters. The essay “The Right to Vote and the Quest for the Optimal Electoral System in Liechtenstein” examines whether Liechtenstein’s electoral law has distinctive features that could be explained by the size of the state. It was published in the summer of 2026 in Volume 2.2025 of the Italian journal “Percorsi Costituzionali,” which is dedicated to the topic of microstates.
 

Research into Liechtenstein’s electoral law continues, particularly from a comparative perspective with Switzerland. Liechtenstein’s proportional representation system, adopted in 1939, drew on the 1919 National Council Election Act and, like the Swiss Confederation and the cantons, allows for split-ticket voting.
