MISSION STATEMENT

RESEARCH AND TEACHING IN AND FOR LIECHTENSTEIN

  • We are an independent research institute with national and international networks, conducting research with university standards with a particular focus on topics relevant to Liechtenstein in the fields of history, politics, law and economics.

  • We maintain active dialogue with stakeholders from academia, politics, business and society in Liechtenstein and beyond.

  • Through our research, we contribute to a scientifically grounded understanding of Liechtenstein, the region and small states within their cross-border interdependencies.

  • We make our academic findings accessible to specialist audiences and the general public.

  • We support early-career researchers and work closely with researchers both in Liechtenstein and abroad.

PRINCIPLES

The Liechtenstein Institute is committed to independence, objectivity and neutrality. Its work is impartial and transparent.

Independence is ensured in particular by the Liechtenstein Institute’s structure as a non-profit association, by funding from diverse sources, and by an independently determined research agenda. Commissions for analysis, expert reports or surveys do not compromise the Liechtenstein Institute’s independence, either in terms of content or financially.

Objectivity is based on the scientific integrity and diligence of the researchers. This includes the free and autonomous design of research and choice of methods, adherence to scientific standards, openness regarding findings, and the open publication of the results and methods of the research conducted.

Neutrality is expressed through openness towards and dialogue with all stakeholders in academia, politics, public administration, civil society and the business sector. The Liechtenstein Institute bases its communication on research findings rather than on opinion or ideology. It does not actively influence political decision-making processes.

MISSION

The research conducted by the Liechtenstein Institute generates new academic insights and links existing knowledge to the specific characteristics of Liechtenstein. In doing so, the Liechtenstein Institute provides scientifically sound answers to key questions regarding the history, present and future of Liechtenstein, the region and small states in general.

OBJECTIVES

The insights gained from this research contribute to a better understanding of Liechtenstein among the public both at home and abroad, promote an open-minded and nuanced Liechtenstein identity, and support the sustainable development of Liechtenstein. The Liechtenstein Institute’s research encompasses both academic and applied research. It takes the form of multi-year research projects, shorter studies, interdisciplinary projects and international collaborations.

NETWORKING

The Liechtenstein Institute has established itself as a research institute with strong national and international networks. Exchange with other research and educational institutions is just as important as dialogue with stakeholders from politics, business and society. In many of its research fields, the Liechtenstein Institute is the only academic institution in Liechtenstein that addresses topics of significance to the country and its neighbouring regions.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Liechtenstein Institute pursues its objectives through research, teaching, publications, contributions to external academic conferences, its own events, media coverage and international cooperation. The staff of the Liechtenstein Institute also produce expert reports and studies, supervise doctoral theses and dissertations, and teach within the framework of professional development, adult education, and at universities and colleges. To promote the next generation of academics, doctoral and internship positions are offered. Furthermore, the Liechtenstein Institute serves as a point of contact for academics from both Liechtenstein and abroad.
