State and Church, Fundamental and current Problems

Volume 26 of the Liechtenstein Politische Schriften (LPS) series documents the symposium "State and Church", which was held by the Liechtenstein Institute in March 1999. The questions arose largely from the topicality of the state-church law situation in the Principality of Liechtenstein, which led to a controversial public debate following the completely unexpected establishment of the Archdiocese of Vaduz. What is certain is that the establishment of the Archdiocese of Vaduz and the associated changes in the law on state-church-relations and the church will have profound and far-reaching consequences for the State and society. The aim of the symposium was to ascertain the questions which arise about the relationship between state and church and the problems behind them, to examine these questions and problems in depth and in a matter-of-fact way, and to attempt to clarify them at least to some extent. This requires a thorough transfer of knowledge. This task was taken on by the units on a scientific basis, which dealt with the relevant issues, took a stand and enabled a critical examination. The volume contains the papers, individual contributions to the discussion and summaries of the discussions at the symposium. The contributions are by representatives of the Catholic and Protestant churches, politicians, historians and lawyers from Germany and abroad.
